Spring has sprung once more as a curtain raiser to the ensuing cricket season. I have always enjoyed the prospect of a new season's cricket in the offing, I hope that everyone else in our club does too.
There is always a lot to be done before the first ball is bowled, Don Aldridge has already made his first cut of the year on the square and it is looking excellent. Without him this club would not exist. There are not many people who would willingly give up as much time as Don does. I swear he caresses every blade of grass on that square, a labour of love indeed. There are a few others who are unsung heroes too. Millie ( Richard Millington) our Secretary, draws us all together, even during the winter, to keep the club going, keep us all informed & get us all to the social events kicking & screaming, AGM, Quiz Night, Awards Evening, Race Night, all have to be planned, he also plays too !! Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday & helps with the square under Don's command. He & Pete Harler have been undergoing training as cricket coaches and promise to keep the youth policy going in order that the club can go on for many more years yet. 80 years & still going strong. They will be , I hope, advising all concerned for the training evenings to come during the summer.
We are hoping to get some new equipment to enable them to bring on the youths of today & make them cricketers of tomorrow. Thanks in advance to both of them for their untiring effort to improve the skills of members. I shall be watching, from the sidelines of course !!
Mark Haines our Saturday captain, has planned & booked a Tour;(our first for probably 10 years) down to Somerset during June. My thanks to Mark for his time & effort on behalf of the club.
Les Cook another member that labours on the square with Don & Mill, also, as our Wednesday captain he will be gathering the troops together once more for the midweek onslaught. John Jenkins & his henchman Bob Batsford will be chasing you all for your subscriptions shortly, so pay up !!!?
Pete Durnell is our fixture secretary & has a very comprehensive fixture list for this season. Thanks Pete, I hope nobody dies of fatigue !!All these people help to get your club working like a well oiled machine. Then, when the work is done, we can all get well oiled in the Plough !!Enjoy your cricket, I always have, make sure you do your bit to get the ground ready for the new season. Oh yes, that reminds me, there is a working party on Sunday 5th April 10.30 am at the ground, see you ALL there !!!
